Definition of Post Tibial Tendonitis
The Posterior Tibial Tendon (fibrous tissue arranged somewhat like a nylon rope) runs down along the inside bump on the ankle, it continues its path across the instep and attaches to the inside of the foot and then into the bottom of the foot. This tendon serves an important purpose. It supports the ankle and the foot arch helping to prevent Over-pronation "Flat Feet" (excessive rolling inward of the foot) and it helps the foot to turn inward during walking.
Problems with this tendon seem to occur in stages from an initial strain and minor degeneration to severe degeneration as we continue to age. With degeneration, the tendon becomes thickened and weaker. A nodule (a bump) may form within the tendon causing the fibrous rope-like structure to become jumbled and not as strong as it once was. This may cause inflammation which may ultimately cause the tendon to rupture (tear).
Possible Causes Post Tibial Tendonitis
Aging - this tendon weakens over time during the aging process.
Over-Use - weakens this tendon.
Over-Pronation - years of Over-Pronation "Flat Feet" may also lead to this condition.
Symptoms of Post Tibial Tendonitis
You may experience one or any combination of these symptoms:
* Pain in the instep of the foot
* Swelling along the pathway of the tendon
* If the tendon has ruptured, a very obvious "Flat Foot" deformity is clearly evident upon visual inspection.
Possible Solutions for Post Tibial Tendonitis
We at Hawley Lane Shoes believe that wearing shoes that are too tight will inhibit the natural motion of the foot and may potentially lead to foot deformities. Proper range of motion combined with proper arch support will help to optimize the health and the biomechanics of the entire foot.
For example, over the past 10 years we have received positive feedback from an abundance of customers who suffered from Post Tibial Tendonitis. These individuals have shared with us that they have experienced significant relief after wearing clogs, sandals, and shoes that provided their feet with a more functional arch support. As a matter of fact, many people notice almost instant relief once they have slipped on a pair of shoes that provide the proper arch support and allow for the proper range of motion of the foot.
