Definition of Metatarsalgia

Simply defined Metatarsalgia is pain under the "ball" of the foot (the Metatarsal Heads). This is the area of the foot located just before the toes. This is a common foot condition that may affect the bones and joints under the second, third or fourth metatarsal heads or the condition may be isolated at the first metatarsal head under the Great Toe/"Big Toe".

Possible Causes of Metatarsalgia

* Aging Process - (as we continue to age the fatty cushioning or the "Fat Pad" that covers the Metatarsal Heads becomes thinner and we may become more prone to develop this condition).

* Improperly Fitted Footwear - Wearing shoes that are too tight and do not provide the appropriate foot arch support or allow for the proper range of motion of the entire foot may be a contributing factor. * Participating in high-impact activities without the benefit of proper footwear is also a factor in this condition.

Symptoms of Metatarsalgia

* One or more of the metatarsal heads may become inflamed and/or painful. It is common to experience recurrent or chronic pain with this condition.

* Typically Metatarsalgia presents with a painful callus (a hardening or toughening of the skin caused by excessive rubbing/irritation) located under the Metatarsal Heads.

Possible Solutions for Metatarsalgia

We at Hawley Lane Shoes believe that wearing shoes that are too tight will inhibit the natural motion of the foot and may potentially lead to foot deformities. Proper range of motion combined with proper arch support will help to optimize the health and the biomechanics of the entire foot.

For example, over the past 10 years we have received positive feedback from an abundance of customers who suffered from Metatarsalgia. These individuals have shared with us that they have experienced significant relief after wearing clogs, sandals, and shoes that provided their feet with a more functional arch support. As a matter of fact, many people notice almost instant relief once they have slipped on a pair of shoes that provide the proper arch support and allow for the proper range of motion of the foot.
